THE FIRST STEP: Back in 1982, my wife and our brand new baby daughter were living in an apartment in Gaithersburg, Maryland. One day, we received a brochure in the mail advertising a new town home complex just up the road. We had no thought of purchasing a home and never even dreamed we could afford to do so. Interest rates were 18% at that time, we had very little money in savings and had only been in the apartment two months into a one year lease. The brochure however peaked our curiosity because it didn't so much sell the actual town homes as the concept and benefit of home ownership. It mentioned equity accumulation, tax breaks and even how there were ways to finance with little or no money to put down. My wife & I talked, decided we had nothing to loose by checking it out and made an appointment with the on-site agent. A month later, we were moving in to our very first home. Our landlord when we approached them about breaking the lease was very excited for us and allowed us to break our lease with the minimal penalty. The key to this little story was that we decided to take that 'first step ' and investigate our options.
